  • Can I install a gas cooker or hob myself?

    No. By law, any work on a gas appliance must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. DIY installation is illegal and unsafe.

  • Do I need a Gas Safe engineer to fit a gas hob?

    Yes, and they need to be qualified specifically for cookers and hobs, which is shown on their Gas Safe ID card. It is always worth checking the card before work begins.

  • How long does it take to fit a gas cooker or hob?

    Usually 30 to 60 minutes for a straightforward replacement. It takes longer if the pipework or connection needs altering.

  • How can I tell if my gas appliance is unsafe?

    Watch for a lazy yellow or orange flame instead of a crisp blue one, black sooting or marks around the appliance, or a smell of gas. If you notice any of these, stop using it and call a Gas Safe registered engineer.

  • Should I have my gas cooker or gas fire serviced?

    Most manufacturers recommend an annual check by a Gas Safe registered engineer to keep the appliance safe and working properly, much like a boiler.

  • Who can install an unvented hot water cylinder?

    An unvented cylinder stores hot water at mains pressure and must be installed and serviced by an engineer with the right qualification, so it operates safely.
